Making your own pizzas at home is much healthier for your family than store bought frozen or deli pizzas with articifial ingredients like preservatives.
When you create your own, you know exactly what the ingredients are.
Tips
The best pizza dough is homemade. Store bought pizza bases have too many artificial ingredients like preservatives which is why they can be kept on the supermarket shelf for a long time.
Flour
The healthy pizza recipe dough is best made with plain flour.
Using a bread maker
Making pizza dough using a bread maker takes all the hassle out of the process. If you plan on using a bread maker for the dough, go straight to the Pizza Dough Ingredients
If you are making the dough by hand click here for homemade pizza dough recipe by hand
Tomato Sauce
I find the best tomato sauce base is Italian Passata – sieved tomatoes which you can find in the supermarket. Thicken with tomato puree to make a paste.
Meats
Try to avoid highly processed meats. I like to use leftover gammon ham or ham on the bone at the supermarker. If you like salami or spicy sausage add just a few pieces per person. Its okay now and again.
Cheese
Mozarella is used as a topping to this healthy pizza recipe. The secret to a healthy pizza is to use less cheese and more vegetables and low processed meat. Pretty Simple.
Vegetables
You can add as many of your favourite veggies to a pizza. Such as… peppers, onions, mushrooms, sweetcorn.
The topping for this healthy pizza recipe includes, ham and mushroom and a little mozzarella.
You can have your pizza and eat it!!
This recipe for homemade pizza dough makes two 12 inch pizza bases
If you are using a bread maker for the dough, that's great! It takes the hassle out of the process.
There are so many bread makers on the market, it would be impossible to cover instructions for all of them here.
You know your bread making machine. Just follow the instructions for making the dough only, not baking it.
Our bread maker is the type which you just need to add all the dough ingredients into the loaf tin which has mixer paddles to make the dough from scratch. It does the whole job for you. I love it!!
We just wait until the bread maker bleeps when the dough is ready, which takes about 1hr 40mins, includes the resting and raising process.
Brilliant!!
Use the manufacturers recommended program for making pizza dough.
The Panasomic Breadmaker shown on the right, has exactly the same features as ours. You can read about the panasonic features and read reviews at Amazon too.
As I mentioned above, the process takes approximately 1hr 40mins to make the dough. When the dough is ready, gently tease it out onto a lightly floured board to rest until cool for approx 15 minutes.
The topping ingredients listed below are enough for one 12 inch healthy pizza recipe. Just double up for two!
6 tbsp Italian Passata – sieved tomatoes
2 tbsp tomato puree
4 ozs grated mozeralla
2 large mushrooms thinly sliced
2 slices of gammon or ham of the bone chopped in to small pieces
fresh parmesan cheese
Lightly grease your pizza baking tray with olive oil. This is important as it stops the pizza base from sticking.
Now, using your hands, gently stretch the dough to fit the inside of the pizza baking tray.
I prefer to use a pizza tray which has small holes in the bottom, which help the pizza dough cook from the bottom up. It also cuts the cooking time.
Adding the Topping to Your Healthy Pizza
Spread the tomato sauce over the dough, leaving about an inch crust edge.
Lightly sprinkle some grated mozeralla over the pizza dough.
Now evenly place the meat and mushrooms over the top.
Sprinkle the rest of the mozerlla over.
Using a little olive oil and a pastry brush, lightly coat the crust edge. This will make the crust moisture and help stop the edge of the pizza sticking to the tray.
Finally…,
Pop your healthy pizza into the oven
Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes.
When the top is golden brown - I always check the underside is lightly browned too.
Remove from the oven and let it cool, just a little, so you can cut your healthy pizza without burning yourself.
