Homemade Indian Dahl Recipe - Super tasty Indian lentil recipe
Dahl also written Dhal, Dal and Tarka Dhal is an Indian style lentil soup recipe. It can also be made thicker and served as a lentil curry or Inidan side dish.
Tips
To make lentil dahl, its best to use split yellow lentils also known as mung dall, red or a mixture of both lentils. Its a quick easy healthy recipe to enjoy anytime.
Wash the lentils until the water is clear, drain and put into a large pot cover with water and bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer removing any scum from the surface
Add the turmeric, garlic, ginger and chillis to the pan
Simmer the mixture until the lentils have become soft and creamy in texture, the length of time varies depending on the age of the lentils.
You may have to add some hot water if the mixture becomes to thick, it is down to the individual as to what thickness they like.
While the lentils are in the final stages of cooking, heat the oil in a frying pan until fairly hot, add the onions ( I sometimes like to add a sliced garlic cloves),
Fry until brown and starting to crisp, add the spices and cook until the mustard seeds pop (take care that they do not pop out of the pan).
Pour most of the onions and spices over the lentils and stir, when you serve it top with the rest of the onions and herbs
You can serve this Indian lentil recipe with rice or as a Indian side dish with any Indian Curries you like.
Its a versatile dish which is also a suitable healthy vegetarian recipe.
We like to have leftover Dhal with a homemade crispy oven baked jacket potato or Healthy Oven Baked Potato Wedges
You can store lentil dahl in the fridge for 3 days maximum.
We always aire on the side of caution when it comes to storing leftovers in the fridge.
Bad bacteria builds up and can make you very ill. The food may look and smell okay..., just don't risk eating it after 3 days.
Yes you can freeze Dhal. I tend to use clear plastic containers with an air tight lid. The type you get a takeaway meal in. Just wash them thoroughly. We pop them in the dishwasher which completely sterilizes them. I hope you enjoy this dahl recipe.Healthy Eating will give you many healthy benefits too! |
